Backup camera

A backup camera is a special type of video camera that is produced specifically for the purpose of being attached to the rear of a vehicle to aid in backing up.
Backup Cameras are alternatively known as ‘Reversing Cameras’ or ‘Rear View Cameras’.
The design of a backup camera is distinct from other cameras in that the image is horizontally flipped so that the output is a mirror image. This is necessary because the camera and the driver face opposite directions, and without it, the camera’s right would be on the driver’s left and vice versa. A mirrored image makes the orientation of the display consistent with the physical mirrors installed on the vehicle.
Backup cameras are common on vehicles that tow difficult-to-see trailers, such as motorhomes. Recently, with the rise in popularity of in-dash DVD players and GPS navigation systems which aid in justifying the expense of adding a color LCD display […]

Boost gauge

A buzzer or beeper is a signaling device, usually electronic, typically used in automobiles, household appliances such as a microwave oven, or game shows.
It most commonly consists of a number of switches or sensors connected to a control unit that determines if and which button was pushed or a preset time has lapsed, and usually illuminates a light on the appropriate button or control panel, and sounds a warning in the form of a continuous or intermittent buzzing or beeping sound. Initially this device was based on an electromechanical system which was identical to an electric bell without the metal gong (which makes the ringing noise). Often these units were anchored to a wall or ceiling and used the ceiling or wall as a sounding board. Another implementation with some AC-connected […]

Fuel gauge

A fuel gauge (or gas gauge) is an instrument used to indicate the level of fuel contained in a tank. Commonly used in cars, these may also be used for any tank including underground storage tanks.
As used in cars, the gauge consists of two parts:
The sender unit
The indicator
The sending unit usually uses a float connected to a variable resistor. When the tank is full, the resistor is set to its low resistance value. As the tank empties, the float drops and the slides a moving contact along the resistor, increasing its resistance, finally reaching its highest value when the tank is empty. In addition, when the resistance is at a certain point, it will also turn on a “low fuel” light on some vehicles.
Meanwhile, the indicator unit (usually mounted on the instrument panel) is measuring and displaying the amount of electrical current flowing through the sending unit. When the tank […]

Idiot light

Idiot lights
Idiot light is a mildly derogatory term that refers to a simplistic method of displaying information about a system (e.g. an engine, or a piece of factory equipment). Usually found in display panels, such as an automobile dashboard, idiot lights consist of an illumination source (usually an incandescent light bulb or an LED) with an explanatory symbol or text label. An “idiot light” will only turn on after a malfunction has occurred, providing no warning in advance, nor details of the malfunction’s extent afterwards.

A Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is an indicator of the internal status of a car engine. It is found on the instrument console of most automobiles. When illuminated, it is typically either a red or amber color. On vehicles equipped with OBD-II, the light has two stages: steady (indicating a minor fault such as a loose gas cap or failing oxygen sensor) and flashing (indicating a severe fault, such […]

Night vision

This article or section may require restructuring to meet Wikipedia’s rods and instead is viewed by the cones.
Some animals, such as cats, dogs, and deer have a structure called tapetum lucidum in the back of the eye that reflects light back towards the retina, increasing the amount of light it captures. In humans, only 10% of the light that enters the eye falls on photosensitive parts of the retina. An animal’s ability to see in low light levels may be similar to what humans see when using first or perhaps second generation

Electronic throttle control

Throttle body with integrated motor actuator
Electronic throttle control (ETC) is an automobile technology which severs the mechanical link between the accelerator pedal and the throttle. Most automobiles already use a throttle position sensor (TPS) to provide input to traction control, antilock brakes, fuel injection, and other systems, but use a bowden cable to directly connect the pedal with the throttle. An ETC-equipped vehicle has no such cable. Instead, the electronic control unit (ECU) determines the required throttle position by calculations from data measured by other sensors such as an accelerator pedal position sensor, engine speed sensor, vehicle speed sensor etc. The electric motor within the ETC is then driven to the required position via a closed-loop control algorithm within the ECU.
The benefits of ETC are largely unnoticed by most drivers because the aim is to make the vehicle power-train characteristics seamlessly consistent irrespective of prevailing conditions, such as engine temperature, […]
